Serving our Grand Rapids community goes beyond advising families about their wealth. Most of us also enjoy participating in a variety of local organizations. Most recently, Steve Starnes, MBA, CFP® accepted a position on the Grand Rapids Symphony board, and Calvin Wiersma, MST, CFP® was named board vice president for the Fulton Street Farmers Market.

Both Steve’s and Calvin’s personal interests have shaped their community service. Steve has played the violin since he was 6 years old. He jokes, “Since I’m not able to play professionally, the opportunity to serve on the Symphony board was the next best opportunity.”

To help the Symphony thrive, Steve looks forward to contributing his financial acumen as well as his passion for music and music education. He especially appreciates the Symphony’s educational outreach to area youth, as well as its Music for Health music therapy program for local dementia and cancer patients.

In similar fashion, Calvin developed an early interest in local food-sourcing. He grew up in an agronomist household, and was inspired to own and operate his own summer corn stand in high school. “I value having good, fresh food to cook and eat,” says Calvin, “and I am delighted to be in a position to support farmers, makers, and the Grand Rapids community.”

With the Fulton Street Farmers Market having celebrated its centennial in 2022, Calvin looks forward to helping the organization build a foundation for its next 100 years. “To me, this means having sustainable funding, and creating a welcoming place for all members of our community,” says Calvin.

We are proud of Steve’s and Calvin’s latest leadership roles in both organizations.
